About

Hello there, and thanks for checking out my blog. My name is James Gordon and I’m the former sports editor of the Ottawa Citizen newspaper in Canada’s capital.

Before I covered the Ottawa Senators and NHL for a living, I spent a few years on Parliament Hill as the national security beat reporter for my paper and what was then known as CanWest News Service. It was an interesting time, post-9/11 and all, a time when interest in national security and intelligence was at its peak, and pretty much nobody was willing to talk about it.

I soon realized that dealing with government flak was totally insufferable, so I set about learning the the ins and outs of the Access to Information Act (the Canadian version of FOI), court documents, land registry records and the like. The result was quite a few front page stories and the realization that you don’t need to listen to PR spin when you can find out what people were saying when they thought nobody was listening.

So yeah, this blog is basically a marriage of two journalistic lives for me: The desire for unsoiled information and sports coverage. Over the coming weeks and months I’ll be posting stuff here that you probably won’t find anywhere else. I hope you’ll give me a follow on Twitter (@sportsdocuments) or subscribe to the blog and stick around for a bit. Also, feel free to e-mail me with your tips or comments at [email protected].
